THE BOX

The Starting point of the Story

You are sitting at home on a Saturday afternoon.  You hear a knock at the door.  When you open the front door, you see the delivery truck pulling away, and look down to see a package on your front porch.  You take the package inside.

You sit the package down on the table and read it's label.  It has no return address, a detail you would remember as Ironic later on....

You were watching the news on TV when you heard the knock, so you sit down to watch the rest, opening the small package and examining it as a commercial interrupts the newscast.

Inside the small package is a great amount of bubble wrap which surrounded what appeared to be a symmetrical blue crystal.

You remove it from the box, and it flickers in the light of the television.  While examining the crystal, you touch the top point, and are surprised when it glows for a moment, and makes a chiming sound.

At that very moment though, the commercial is cut off half way through, and a local news personality appears on the screen in a state of obvious emotional distress.

He reads from a piece of paper on his desk, barely looking up at the camera.  "At 3:22 pm today, 4 minutes ago, we were made aware that a nuclear warhead is inbound to our city at this moment.  This is not a test of any kind.  Time is not available for any type of plan.  If you are hearing this message, you have 31 minutes to get at least 2 miles outside the city"

The newscaster quickly looked up, and then over at the wall clock.  "Put that on a loop" he yelled, apparently at the crew behind the camera.  "I'm getting the hell out of here".  With that, he bolted from the desk and out of frame.

At first, you are not sure whether or not to take it seriously.  After all, who would launch such an attack, and why?

You are pondering the situation for a moment when you hear the city's emergency air raid sirens begin to blare in the distance, with a sound both deep and shrill.
